Warren Ritter: He looks like a short, hungry version of Prince Charming. But he's no charmer, he's sarcastic, manic depressive, and thoroughly leftist. These days he's reading Tarot cards in Berkeley, California, when he's not finding murderers.
Sally McLaughlin: This adorable computer hacker is feisty, brilliant, and paraplegic. It hasn't dampened her spirits any. Watch your bank accounts, especially if you are right wing. Also watch out for Ripley, her Rottweiler attack dog. This is one dangerous chick!
Rose Janeworth: A psychotherapist for years, she is tough and loving. She isn't taking Warren's evasiveness for long, and he respects her and hates her for it.
Heather Wellington/Talbridge: A not-so-innocent teenager who comes of age and becomes an orphan over the space of one traumatic month. She is victimized, but she is no victim.
Max Valdez: He runs a security agency in the barrio of Oakland. He can guard you, spy on you, and maybe kill you.
Officer James McNally: A cop on a bicycle patrolling the streets of Berkeley who can shoot almost as well as Warren, and may be his best male friend.
